HOUGHTON - Two new staff writers have joined The Daily Mining Gazette.
Ashley Curtis and Scott Viau started work Monday. In addition to having primary photo editing duties, Curtis will cover the Copper Country Intermediate School District and write business articles and features. Viau will cover Ontonagon and Keweenaw counties, in addition to other beat assignments.
Curtis graduated in 2011 from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, where she majored in marketing communications with an emphasis on agriculture, and minored in journalism.
Curtis said she has always loved to write.
"I had the opportunity to write for my school paper, and I really loved that, so when this position opened up, I thought I would give that a try," she said.
Curtis most recently worked as a public relations representative for the Western Upper Peninsula Planning & Development Region.
Viau graduated in May from Northern Michigan University in Marquette. He was also a staffer for The North Wind at NMU, where he started as copy editor and reporter before moving to features editor and then managing editor.
"The more I got into it, the more I fell in love with it and decided that's the career path I wanted to take," he said.
Both Curtis and Viau like the idea of working at a local paper and said they are excited to begin their journalism careers.
"I'm very happy to be a part of this newspaper, and I look forward to a great time," Viau said.
