CALUMET - It's getting chilly, and the New Beginnings Angel Mission Free Store is in the process of conducting its annual coat drive for people who may not be able to afford a new coat.

Terry Bazin, store co-director, said this is the sixth year for the coat drive.

"We are looking for any winter coats in good working order," she said.

Also needed are hats, gloves, mittens, snow pants and boots, Bazin said. The items don't have to be new, but they should be in good condition.

Bazin said items for donation should be brought to the store at 112 Fifth St. in Calumet. The store will be cleared of other items Saturday, and the winter clothing will be displayed and offered for those who need them.

People have been generous in their donating of winter clothing, Bazin said.

"Last year we did over 500 coats," she said.

Also taking place at the store until Oct. 31 is a spaghetti sauce challenge, Bazin said.

Individuals and organizations are asked to bring in donations for the store's food pantry, Bazin said.

For every can or jar of spaghetti sauce, Bazin said 5 pounds will be added to the weight of the donated food. For every box of hamburger extender, 3 pounds will be added, and for every can of meat, 1 pound will be added to the weight total.

"Whoever has the most weight at the end of the challenge, we'll give them a pizza party," she said. "I challenge everybody to bring us some food."
