To the editor:
Houghton County Treasurer Kathleen Beattie is a candidate for re-election this year. Kathy works tirelessly for the citizens of our county. She goes out of her way to be accommodating.
If you're behind on your property taxes, please contact Kathy. She'll do everything she can within the law to establish a payment plan that works for you and allows you to maintain your property. Kathy serves her position with both passion and compassion.
As county treasurer, Kathy established the Houghton County Land Bank Authority. The Land Bank receives no direct funding, yet has made positive strides toward keeping properties on the tax rolls, reducing blight, increasing the availability of affordable housing, and neighborhood stabilization. Under Kathy's leadership the Land Bank has made a positive impact in the county.
As county treasurer, Kathy organized a volunteer group to research the validity of properties recorded as being state-owned. Occasionally, in the past, deeds for properties obtained from the state were not recorded, resulting in taxable property remaining listed as tax exempt. Researching these properties is done at no cost to the county, and increasing the accuracy of these records is a benefit to the county.
Kathy gives her time and expertise to aid other entities in the county. For example, earlier this year she spent evenings and weekends assisting a local school district to correct information in their documents, yielding about $125,000 for the district. This was done at no cost to the county.

As county treasurer, Kathy has implemented positive change within Houghton County. She is well-respected by her peers. Kathy's performance as county treasurer merits our continued support. I encourage all residents of Houghton County to re-elect Kathleen Beattie Nov. 6.
