HOUGHTON - The verdict is in and two Copper Country teams received assignments for the pre-district round of the Michigan High School Athletic Association football playoffs.
In Division 6, the Calumet Copper Kings, in their eighth consecutive year in the playoffs, earned a home game. Calumet (6-3) will host Manistique (6-3).
The Copper Kings were spared a likely trip below the Mackinac Bridge by the admission of Iron Mountain as a 5-4 team. The Mountaineers, who will play Negaunee in the opposite pre-district first-round game, bumped Boyne City into Region 1, District 2. Which teams land in which district is determined geographically. Iron Mountain is the smallest team in Division 6 by enrollment.
L'Anse, in its first postseason appearance since 2007, will face the school which ended that playoff run five years ago: the Forest Park Trojans.
The Purple Hornets and Trojans both finished their regular seasons with 7-2 marks, but the MHSAA's playoff point system gave the higher seed in the Division 8 bracket to L'Anse by a miniscule margin: 48.542 to 48.389.
Official dates and start times for the games will be announced early this week.
