CHASSELL - At the Chassell Township Schools Board of Education meeting Monday, the board discussed the Non-Homestead Millage Renewal, according to a written report by the school board.

This millage is not a new tax, but one approved by voters in 2004 and 2010. The millage represents industrial, commercial and some agricultural property and second homes. It will not affect a person's primary residence.

If the millage is not passed, Chassell Township Schools may have to cut or reduce programs in order to make up for the lost money.

Also at the meeting, a report was made by members of the seventh grade science class on the results of the Chassell Beach cleanup from Sept. 24. The total amount of trash collected from the beach weighed 32 pounds. A total of 78 plastic bags, 14 2-liter bottles, 49 glass bottles/cans, 113 food wrappers and 153 cigarette butts were picked up.

The students also did tests for e. coli and coliform, which were primarily found along the shore by the weeds.

Two new full-time employees, who are former members of the AmeriCorps, were introduced to the board. New librarian Georgeann Jukuri stated there were several changes to the library, including a DVD lending library, as well as an inter-library loan program between the Portage Lake District Library and the Chassell Township School Library. The other new employee, Rick ChioChios, will be teaching sixth grade English and science for half of the day, while the other half will be spent on computer support.
