Earl G. Rintala

HANCOCK CANAL - Earl G. Rintala, 85, a resident of the Hancock Canal area, died on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012 at his home.

He was born in Stanton Township on May 18, 1927, a son of the late August and Helen (Patana) Rintala. He attended school in Hancock and Redridge and later graduated from Houghton High School.

On Oct. 18, 1947, he was married to the former Aune M. Koski in Laurium. She preceded him in death on February 4, 2011.

Earl was employed for 27 years in the electrical department of Michigan Technological University where he worked in the machine shop, retiring in 1984.

He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hancock.

Earl and his wife, Aune, enjoyed going to sporting events in which their grandchildren participated. He also enjoyed hunting deer and small game, golfing and walking.

Surviving are one son and two daughters: Sandra (Bob) Backon of Houghton, Roger (Sandy) Rintala of Calumet and Christine (Jim) Lickman of the Hancock Canal; four grandchildren, Steven (Leigh) Backon of Gross Point Farms, MI, Jasen Rintala and his fiance, Amy of Hope Mills, NC, Nina Backon of Houghton and Jesse (Steph) Rintala of Menomonie, Wis.; two great-granddaughters, Charleigh Backon and Eleanor Rintala; two great-grandsons, Axel Rintala and Easten Rintala; a brother, Sherwood (Shirley) Rintala of the Houghton Canal area; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents and wife, Earl was also preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia and Clara Rintala.

Interment with graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, in the Oskar Cemetery with Pastor D.J. Rasner to officiate.
