CHASSELL - Martin Logan, 67, a resident of Chassell, died unexpectedly on Monday, October 22, 2012.

He was born in Hancock, Mich., on June 5, 1945, a son of the late Walter and Elma (Hukkala) Logan.

Marty graduated in 1963 from the Chassell High School and attended Suomi College, Michigan Technological University and Northern University where he received a degree in Mathematics.

He was married to the former Pauline Sauvola in 1968 in Hancock.

Marty was first employed with the Houghton Schools where he taught Math. He then moved with his wife to New Hampshire where he worked in the construction business for approximately 20 years. After moving back to Chassell in 1991, he worked for DP Construction as a bookkeeper, until retiring in June of 2011.

Marty was a member of the Apostolic Lutheran Church. He loved sports, playing basketball for Chassell High School and Suomi College. He also played softball for many years, rarely missing a game. He enjoyed hunting and golfing but his greatest love was time spent with his children and grandchildren. His family was his life and he loved them dearly.

Surviving are his wife, Pauline of Chassell; five sons and three daughters, Brett (Janelle) Logan of Woodland, Wash., Abby Logan of Chassell, Kyle (Eileen) Logan of Tri Cities, Wash., Wade (Anna) Logan of Washougal, Wash., Polly Sue (Gary) Goddard of Chassell, Abe (Lisa) Logan of Vancouver, Wash., Tuula (Shawn) Autio of Chassell and Link (Coleen) Logan of Ada, Okla.; 27 grandchildren, Trent, Trace, Cole, Lucas, Zane and Devin Logan, Logan, Garrett, Marti, Blade and Maelene Warren, Ryan, Bryce, Cami and Ty Logan, Trenten, Teven and Tristin Collins, Jacy, Zachary, Carly, Emma and Jax Goddard, Dawson and Adelyn Logan, Kyra and Brynn Autio; one great-grandson, Gavin Collins; a sister, Judith (Donald) Holombo of Houghton; two brothers-in-law, Kenneth (Phyllis) Sauvola of Rindge, N.H., Larry (Gladys) Sauvola of Greer, S.C.; three sisters-in-law, Sheila Sauvola of Greer, S.C., Kathy Samuli of Hancock, Ruth Sauvola of Greer, S.C.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, Marty was also preceded in death by a daughter, Fanni-Mae Logan; and four brothers-in-law, Tom, James, David and William Sauvola.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 26, 2012, at the Laurium Apostolic Lutheran Church with Pastors Rodney Johnson and Jay Weidner to officiate. Visitation will be at the church from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday and one hour prior to services on Friday.
