Best county board to date

October 25, 2012
The Daily Mining Gazette

To the editor:

I am writing this letter as a current Keweenaw County Commissioner who sits on the Board with Don Piche. We are just finishing our first term and it has truly been a learning experience. It has also been a pleasure to serve the community with Don. We would both like to continue with the board as there is more that needs to be done. I believe the current board makes sound decisions that benefit Keweenaw County and its residents.

Don has lived, worked and raised a family in Keweenaw County. While on the Board, Don listens and works with county employees to find solutions to their problems. I would ask that you talk to those that he has worked with before you make your decision on who to vote for.

Don spends a large amount of time staying on top of issues and going to meetings, ensuring that Keweenaw County remains efficient and that its residents are always represented first.

Don was recently instrumental in receiving grants totaling $45,000 for courthouse repairs. After meeting with local engineering firms, coordinating the necessary government documents and working with contractors, the Keweenaw County courthouse roof was replaced. This certainly could not have been accomplished without Don's efforts.

The voters of Keweenaw County supported a millage in August for maintenance at our county seat. Don Piche was there again at the heart of this project. I would ask the voters of Grant and Eagle Harbor Townships to support Don Piche in his passion to see that the historic courthouse, jail and grounds are preserved and maintained for future generations.

Fact Box

The Daily Mining Gazette welcomes letters to the editor from readers.

Letters should be signed and include name, address and telephone number. Names will not be withheld and letters should be no longer than 400 words. No personal attacks. Writers are limited to one letter per month. The Gazette reserves the right to edit letters for length, as well as for spelling and punctuation.

Mail letters to: Letters to the Editor, The Daily Mining Gazette, P.O. Box 368, Houghton, MI 49931. Letters may also be e-mailed to jnordberg@mininggazette.com or submitted on the Gazette's Web site, mininggazette.com, by clicking on "Submit News."

As (Keweenaw County Board of Commissioners Chair Ernest Mooney) departs the board, it is difficult for me to consider the thought of Don Piche simply not being there. The continuity and collaboration with your county board today is the best seen to date. Great strides have been made in correcting deficiencies from the past. We truly do work well as a team.

Please give Don Piche consideration as you cast your ballot Nov. 6 for your next Keweenaw County Commissioner for District 1. Focus on what Don has done for Keweenaw County. We work well together and wish to continue to listen and to make wise decisions for you.
