Voting for Piche

October 25, 2012
The Daily Mining Gazette

To the editor:

A recent letter to the editor stated why national party labels mean little in local elections. I agree, and that is why I, as a Republican, will be voting for Don Piche, a Democrat, for Keweenaw County Board of Commissioners from Grant and Eagle Harbor townships.

In his two years as commissioner, Mr. Piche has had a great impact on the county. He was instrumental in getting a grant to repair the courthouse, acted quickly to solve the problems in the equalization department, greatly improved the working environment at the court house and represented Keweenaw County on numerous boards. Above all, Mr. Piche is a good listener to all and is not motivated by special interest groups.

The previous letter, which I referenced, talked about Don Keith's opposing "good ol' boy" governance. I have heard that description before, but have yet to have anyone explain what that means.

It has been used interchangeably with the "Mohawk Mafia," another twist which has yet to be explained.

I assume both terms describe people who have lived here all their lives and may oppose or not agree to all the new ideas of those moving here from another area, drawn here because of what the Keweenaw is, only to try to make it what they left.

Don Piche has been here all his life and has a deep love and respect for the Keweenaw. Through his guidance and commitment we will all continue to enjoy it as it is, a place of beauty for all.
