HANCOCK - Agnes Balconi, 92, formerly of Hancock, passed away on October 21, 2012, in Novi, Mich.
She was born on September 29, 1920, to the late Anton and Mary (Butkovich) Jackovich. She graduated in 1938 from Houghton High School. Agnes was a devoted Catholic, wife, and homemaker. She made her home in the Detroit area after her marriage to Charles Balconi on June 12, 1946, at St. Mary's Church in Atlantic Mine.
After retirement in 1975, Agnes and Charles moved back to Hancock. She was a lifelong member of the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock, and also the Croatian Fraternal Union of America, and the church altar society.
Agnes will be best remembered for her love of polka dancing and beautiful waltzes. Together she and Charles danced together in search of their favorite bands and tunes that they so loved. They were both recognized members of the "Million Mile Polka Club."
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles J. Balconi; her son, John A. (Cheryl) Balconi of Wolverine Lake; two sisters, Eva Forsell and Virginia Stachowiak; and a brother, Tony "Budo" Jackovich.
She is survived by her granddaughters, Katherine (Chris) Nall of San Tan Valley, Ariz., and Angelita (Mike) Mardiros of Rochester, Mich; a great-granddaughter, Livia Capri Mardiros; two brothers, Joseph Jackovich of Houghton and Frank (Barbara) Jackovich of Dodgeville; a sister, Bertha Smith; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock with Rev. Fr. Brian Gerber to officiate. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.
