Lakes finish league play unbeaten

LAKE LINDEN - Lake Linden-Hubbell completed an unbeaten run through the Mountain Lakes Conference Thursday night, sweeping Ewen-Trout Creek 3-0 (25-22, 25-10, 25-12) in the regular season finale.

Mandy Perreault notched 14 kills in her last home appearance, while Brittni Kisul added eight. Kisul had a team-best eight digs, while another senior, Jaimie Middleton, led the Lakes with six aces.

The Lakes fielded an all-senior line-up to start, then broke out of an even first set with six kills in a row by Perreault.

In set two, the Lakes jumped out to an 11-3 lead with their regulars, then added another five-point run from Morgan Gast's serve for a 19-9 lead.

In the third, LL-H put in several reserves, and junior Katie Heikkinen served up six in a row as the Lakes broke an 11-11 tie. Middleton served out the last seven points, including four aces.

Both teams have district tournament play next week. LL-H plays Baraga at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Ontonagon. E-TC's tournament opener is Wednesday in Crystal Falls against Watersmeet.

L'Anse 3, Ontonagon 1

ONTONAGON - The Purple Hornets finished their season with a road victory at Ontonagon, 25-27, 12-25, 25-17, 25-14 with help from nine kills from Val Rajala.

Becca Hulkonen and Kayla Nagele finished with four kills apiece and Heather McCarthy had four aces.

For Ontonagon, Chelsea Truscott had a team-best 10 digs, plus four aces and two kills. Bobbie Ross led Ontonagon with six kills and added five digs, while Chloe Ashley posted three kills and six digs.

L'Anse begins district tournament play at Negaunee Tuesday night at 6 vs. Ishpeming. Ontonagon hosts its district and will face Dollar Bay Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Baraga 3, Chassell 1

CHASSELL - The Vikings topped the Panthers 25-16, 17-25, 25-23, 25-23 despite eight kills from Maddy Huhta and six or more from three others.

Kaitlyn Hietala finished with seven kills for Chassell, while Kayla Destrampe and Kirsten Daavettila had six apiece.

Defensively, Jamie Dompier led Chassell with 23 digs, while Daavettila had 18 and Lexi Pyykkonen 14. Pyykkonen dished out 20 assists.

Chassell, which because of its cooperative agreement with Jeffers, competes as a Class C school, will play Houghton at 6 p.m. Monday in Hancock in its district opener.

Baraga plays Lake Linden-Hubbell Tuesday in a D district semi.
