To the editor:
The public interest in the issues confronting Portage Township was evident by the turnout at the League of Women Voters of the Copper Country's Portage Township Candidate Forum Oct. 22. Unfortunately, the candidate attendance was very disappointing.
With the exception of incumbents (Peggy) Anderson and (James) Zerbst, who were out of town and unable to attend, the Democratic candidates were out in force for the LWCC forum. Sadly, it seems the Republican candidates were out busily putting up yet more of their signs - all of which are in violation of state campaign law, as they fail to have "Paid for by ____" at the bottom.
From the incumbents' responses at the forum, it was apparent that Portage Township is currently being well served by some very experienced and qualified people. I seldom vote party line, but in the case of the Portage Township candidates, it is clear the Democrats are the ones who respect the voters enough to take the time to come out and make their positions public.
