ONTONAGON - Twin sweeps propelled Ontonagon and Lake Linden-Hubbell into a Class D district volleyball championship match Thursday.
The Lakes defeated Baraga 3-0 (25-23, 25-11, 25-19), while the Gladiators took down Dollar Bay 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-19).
In the first semifinal, LL-H got four straight kills from Mandy Perreault for a 23-15 lead in the first set, only for Taylor Swanson to serve Baraga back into it with five straight points, including an ace. Brittni Kisul, however, shut the door for LL-H with back-to-back kills.
In the second set, LL-H had a 13-10 lead before a seven-point run on Annelise Polkinghorn's serve. Two of the seven were aces and two more Perreault kills. Perreault served in the next rotation and the Lakes closed it out with two aces around two Kisul kills.
The third featured eight ties in the early going before a five-point run on Kisul's serve put LL-H up 18-13. Rebecca Larson led Baraga back into it with three straight points.
The Vikings closed to 21-19, but back-to-back Kisul blocks (the second with an assists from Sarah Audette) put LL-H a point away, and Perreault offered the match-winning ace.
Perreault totaled 16 kills and Kisul 10. Both had three aces. Ciara Larson led LL-H defensively with 10 digs. Kisul had 10 and libero Erin Gast 8. Audette posted 15 assists and Polkinghorn 10.
In the nightcap, the Glads got seven aces from Chelsea Truscott in a sweep of the Bays.
Bobbi Ross notched four kills, Audrey Niemi added three, while Brooke Turin put up five aces, two kills and was the team assist leader.
The district final will be at 6 p.m. in the Gladiator Arena.
