LAKE LINDEN - George "Peanut" Vollmer, 92, of Lake Linden, passed away at Our Lady of Mercy on October 29, 2012.
He was born in Hubbell on February 13, 1920, a son of Rudolph and Mary (Hainault) Vollmer. George attended St. Cecilia School in Hubbell and graduated from Lake Linden-Hubbell High School in 1937.
He worked in Detroit as a cabinetmaker until he was called to service during World War II. He was in the U.S. Army in the European Theater: France, Germany and Italy.
He later worked for C&H as a watch engineer until its' closing in 1968. He also worked as the custodian for St. Joseph Church in Lake Linden for 10 years and at Our Lady of Mercy in Hubbell for ten years until his retirement in 1984.
George was married to Mabel Paquin at St. Joseph Catholic Church on January 31, 1948.
He was a life member of American Legion Post 90 in Lake Linden and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
George was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved to pick thimbleberries. He was also a craftsman and he and his wife attended many craft shows in the Copper Country. He will be remembered for the "buzz saws" and "Jumping Georges" that he made. He was always willing to help others.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Russell Vollmer; and a grandson, Roger Latowski.
George is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mabel; three children, Michael (Nancy) Vollmer of Sheboygan Falls, Wis., Mary (Robert) Latowski of Howard Grove, Wis. and Gail (Donald) Deiro of Hubbell; six grandchildren, Scott Vollmer, Kurt (Tauna) Vollmer, Sheila (Brent) Binder, Kelly (Mark) Grandinetti, Jessica (Bradley) Pini and Chris Deiro; five great-grandchildren, Audrey, Julia, Maris, Vance and Dayne; three brothers, Hubert (Irene) of Lansing, Richard (Hilda) of Lansing and James (Barbara) of White Pine; sisters-in-law, Ann Vollmer of Lake Linden and Florence Bashaw of Lake Linden; and numerous nieces and nephews.
George's family wishes to thank the staff at Our Lady of Mercy for the wonderful care he received for the last nine years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3 in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lake Linden with Fr. Francis Dobrzenski to officiate. Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. on Friday in the Pearce Funeral Home in Lake Linden with a parish prayer service at 6 p.m. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Lake Linden.
