HURONTOWN - Dr. Tim Hunt, a Marquette resident and graduate of Michigan State University School of Veterinary Medicine, founded the company eight years ago when he realized the need for a high-energy kibble for his own kennel of sled dogs and Momentum Highly Athletic Dog Food was created.
Hunt, DVM, started his veterinary practice in 1993 in Harvey, Michigan and has raced with his Alaskan Huskies throughout the world, including the Iditarod and served as a veterinarian in various races. His on-the-job training led to the creation of the first diet in his garage using a cement mixer and a variety of different supplements, oils, kibble and raw meat.
Based on what was learned from the first diet, new formulas were created. He found that certain levels of ingredients work well to help a dog to feel more active and energetic and improve their overall health, regardless of what the dog does for a living.

According to Hunt, the difference with Dr. Tim's diets is severalfold. First, Dr. Tim's uses high levels of animal proteins to make up the protein portion of the diet. It ensures, on average, that 87 percent of all proteins in the formulas are derived from another animal. Simply put, dogs and cats flourish on diets rich with animal protein.
Next, their slow-cook method of production allows for 95 percent digestibility of the varied starch sources, so the dog or cat can actually utilize them. Also, the high quality, low ash proteins are a key component in these foods because they provide essential amino acids. Lastly, high levels of menhaden fish oil provide the overall high level of Omega-3 fatty acids, which benefit the health of a pet.
Momentum, the original formula, is for the high performance dog with high protein, low carbohydrate levels. Pursuit is for moderately active dogs, while Kinesis is for dogs of all ages and activity levels. New to the line-up, Dr. Tim's Grain Free Formula was developed for dogs of all ages, who may have allergies or sensitivities. Also available is Chase, Dr. Tim's food for cats of all ages. This formula is a true carnivore diet based on what a cat would eat in the wild.
"Animals' dietary needs are much different than ours," said Hunt. "So although it seems counter intuitive that you could feed a high-fat, high-protein kibble to your pet, yet have them healthier than ever, it is exactly what they need; this is how they have been eating in the wild forever."
Produced in Lisbon, Ohio, Dr. Tim's sales began with markets in the U.S. and over the last several years have secured a toe-hold in parts of Europe, Scandinavia and Asia. The European market is serviced by a production plant in Liverpool, England.
For the past two years, Dr. Tim's Pet Food Company has been the sole supplier of dog and cat food for UPAWS, the local animal shelter in Marquette. In addition, each pet that is adopted goes home with a free bag of Dr. Tim's food. Hunt strongly believes that starting and maintaining proper nutrition for a dog or cat will lead to a longer and healthier life for the animal.
With the results he has seen in his patients at Bayshore Veterinary Hospital, it is that obvious proper nutrition can payoff.
"Choose wisely for your pet's sake, as they have no thumbs and can't open a cupboard and make it themselves," said Hunt.
