PORTAGE ENTRY - Lempi E. (Wiinikka) Heikkinen, 91, a former resident of Portage Entry, passed away Thursday evening, Nov. 8, 2012, at Cypress Manor Nursing Home in Hancock where she had been a resident patient since 2000.
She was born December 18, 1920, in Motley, Mich., a daughter of the late Henry and Anna (Peltoniemi) Ohtonen. As a child, she moved to the Snake River Hill area where she attended the Snake River School and graduated from Chassell High School.
In August 1948, she was united in marriage to Elmer Wiinakka and he preceded her in death on April 14, 1977. On May 28, 1983, she was united in marriage to Henry Heikkinen and he preceded her in death on April 3, 2009.
Lempi was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Chassell.
She had worked as a clerk at Chassell IGA and the Pamida Store in Houghton when it first opened.
Lempi enjoyed reading, bowling, fishing, cross country skiing and watching different sports on television.
Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Tyne Bera; and her brothers, John, Waino and Henry.
Surviving are her children, Barbara (Ralph) Raffaelli of South Range, Diane (George) Linicus of East Hampton, Conn., Kathleen (Dean) Pearson of Ironwood and June (Alan) Larsh of Ishpeming; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A private funeral service for Lempi will be held at a later date in the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hancock with Rev. Chuck Fluegel to officiate. Spring burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests memorials be given to the Cypress Manor Activities Fund in memory of Lempi (Wiinikka) Heikkinen.
