Weeping and sleeping

November 13, 2012
The Daily Mining Gazette

To the editor:

Mr. and Mrs. America and all the ships at sea, it is time to fix "Sandys."It is up to you and me. There is no help from the universities. I have tried and they can't hear the plea.

In the early '60s a George Spear from Marquette asked Northern Michigan University to use its computer to determine an energy source that could protect the marina. The result was determined and Mr. Spear set up the equipment. It worked. The Army Corps of Engineers from Massachusetts loaned a device that read water temperature to four decimals. This information was a boom to marinas and shore protection.

Now it is 2012. Sandy is the example where America did nothing. We watched it begin, grow, destroy. Hurricanes begin their route, grow, destroy.

We watch and gasp at their energy. The color, the size, temperature, direction, etc., and in the end we weep and go to sleep.

It is all about pounds per square inch. It is the water temperature, the wind, the weight of the waves, the circular motion, the surge, the fact that we can't tame this act of Mother Nature.
