Remember the reason for the season

November 16, 2012
The Daily Mining Gazette

To the editor:

"The Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel." Isaiah 7:14

Immanuel means "God with Us." Advent the four weeks preceding Christmas have been celebrated by Christians for many centuries.

Retailers start the Advent season at stores on a day called "Black Friday." Advent, a season for celebration and thanks to God, has been changed into the season retailers make the most money. Instead of saying thanks to God and Merry Christmas, they mutter, "Happy holidays," and "Seasons greetings." It is about time we remembered the reason for the season, Jesus Christ.

On that first Christmas, the first guests were poor shepherds who heard the angels say, "Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men." Luke 2:14

They brought no material gifts, just believing hearts thankful to God for the great gift, a Savior.

We sing, "We Three Kings of Orient Are." Their gifts symbolized three things.

Gold represents Christ's kingship of all people.

Frankincense represents that Christ is our everlasting high priest.

Myrrh represents Christ's death on the cross of Calvary. Jesus shed his blood to forgive us our sins and protect us from everlasting death and Hell by his glorious resurrection.

"So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver." 2 Corinthians 9:7

We can give many things that cost no money. Give the sad and lonely a hug. Give others a smile, a pat on the back, thanks, forgiveness, a word of encouragement, a sympathetic ear, an unexpected visit, or a call to say "I love you and God loves you, too."

Jesus told us, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." John 3:16

This verse tells us God loved the world. Not just nationalities "A" or "Z," denomination "Y" but not denomination "X," not just skin tone white or black, but ALL. Jesus Christ came to unite all classes of people and nations to believe in the name of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

No trips to the mall, credit card or cash needed, just a believing heart. Remember the light and joy of this season is Jesus Christ. Merry Christmas.
