HANCOCK - Members of the Hancock Public Schools Board of Education received a plaque Monday honoring a long-time district official.

Joy Dennis presented the plaque for her father, Gordon G. Barkell, who was a teacher, coach, assistant superintendent and superintendent in the district from 1954 until his retirement in 1990. He was instrumental in getting the district's elementary school constructed, and it was named in his honor.

Barkell died on June 29 at the age of 83.

In presenting the plaque to the board, Dennis said growing up she spent many hours with her father in various buildings in the district, so she realized how important Hancock schools were to him.

"I hope you know what value our dad put on the children in Hancock," she said.

The construction of the elementary school building was most important for her father, Dennis said.

It's expected the plaque for Gordon G. Barkell will be installed in the vestibule of the main entrance to the building sometime this week.

Dennis said her family would like to do other things at the school in the future.

"We hope you let us come back next summer to do a project," she said.

Board members approved the hiring of Steve Raasio to be the boys' junior varsity basketball coach at the recommendation of Athletic Director John Sanregret, who said Raasio has worked in the district for a while.

"Steve has been volunteering in the elementary school program for many years," Sanregret said.

Varsity boys' basketball coach Curtis Wittenberg agrees Raasio is a good choice, Sanregret said.

Board members voted unanimously to approve the hiring of Raasio.

In other business, board members:

approved the hiring of Kathleen Storm as an elementary paraprofessional aide.

approved the district's 2011-12 audit as presented to them during their Nov. 14 work session.

approved a bond refinancing resolution.

approved the revised budget for 2012-13.
