To the editor:
It was to my surprise when a Mr. Roy Berto of Dagget, Mich. paid me a visit on my 90th birthday.
My daughter and her husband kept it a secret of his coming, as did my son who was visiting me from his home in St. Clair, Mich. A dinner that was already prepared by my daughter and her husband was brought in for this occasion.
We spent the whole afternoon together taking pictures and enjoying the company of a new friend who had to make a four-hour trip back to his home in Dagget. Roy's birthday fell on Oct. 7 and mine came on Oct. 9.
When I first met Roy on April 26 in Escanaba, it took me only a minute to realize that my Honor Flight was going to be most enjoyable because of the pleasant nature of my guide. Roy gave me an artistic self-produced birthday card and brightly colored wooden cutout that shows "The Dove of Peace" with our nation's flag in the background which he produced in his workshop. Roy is a veteran of the Vietnam era and served on the DMZ line in Korea. He is a past commander of his VFW Post in Dagget and is a helper to all veterans who need assistance on any matter.
It did not take me long to choose as to where this "Dove of Peace" will hang on a wall in my home.
