HOUGHTON - The Home for the Holidays Gift Market will bring authors, artists and crafters to the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts at Michigan Technological University from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

This year's event will have about 40 vendors, said organizer Diane Simonson.

There are great food vendors, she said, including jams and jellies, chocolate truffles, maple syrup and artisanal bread. Shoppers can also pick up holiday items such as soy candles, beach glass jewelry and nature photography.

Last year’s Home for the Holidays Gift Market, held in the lobby of the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts in Houghton, featured a variety of artist displays. This year’s event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Meteorologist and author Karl Bohnak will make an appearance at Home for the Holidays to promote his book, "So Cold a Sky." A new Christmas CD by PJ and Milt Olsson will also be on sale, while stained-glass artist Sidney Butler will also be on hand to play harp.

Others include a chainsaw artist who makes large carvings such as bears and woolen goods from an alpaca farm in Baraga.

Simonson is a vendor herself, selling fresh Christmas wreaths, which she also ships as far as Germany, Scotland and Singapore.

"We have quite the following," she said. "We always have ladies lining up that fight for our wreaths."

Simonson said the popularity stems from a lot of factors, such as their selectivity of vendors, the scheduling two days after Thanksgiving - which brings out-of-state visitors - and the setting of the Rozsa.

"I think people really appreciate handmade quality," she said. "We're getting to be more popular. I almost changed the name to 'Handmade for the Holidays.'"
