Jets fall short in debut

The Daily Mining Gazette

PAINESDALE - Four 3-pointers from Kelsey Heinonen and a strong second half wasn't enough for Jeffers to cancel out a slow start Tuesday.

Watersmeet preserved enough of its 13-point halftime lead for a 49-43 victory in both teams' season openers.

"They got off to a quick start. They were running circles around us," Jeffers coach Kathleen Storm said of the first half. "We came back out and I think we hammered a lot harder on the defensive end."

The Jets held the Lady Nimrods to single digits in the third and fourth quarters and closed within four after the break but couldn't get all the way back.

Heinonen equaled her career high in scoring, set Jan. 3, 2012 at Lake Linden-Hubbell, while Haley Makela kicked in 10 points for the first double-digit effort of her career.

The visitors put three players in double figures led by Michaela Burke's 14.

Jeffers remains home to play Hancock Friday night.
