CALUMET - There were horses, musicians, visits with Santa Claus, window decorating contests and more in the first of four weekends for Christmas in Calumet.

Saturday afternoon, Lisa Cunard of Hancock was waiting with her children by Rowe Furniture for the chance to take a horse-drawn wagon ride.

"The kids thought it would be fun to take a wagon ride," she said. "We came for the kids."

Bob Norden, Roger Laub, Benji Brotherton and Katie Riutta (not pictured) play for a crowd on Fifth Street during Christmas in Calumet Saturday. Christmas in Calumet celebrations continue throughout the month of December.

And they weren't disappointed, shouting "Horsey alert!" as the wagon approached.

After disembarking from the wagon, Renee Erkkila of Laurium surveyed her children for their reactions - all positive.

"The weather's nice, and it was something fun," she said.

The brass quartet of Katie Riutta, Bob Norden, Roger Laub and Benji Brotherton was strolling around downtown playing carols such as "Deck the Halls."

Laub was thankful for the nice weather.

"The horns actually work," he said. "It's nice, and we hope it gets more shoppers out."

Andrea Vonmarkle of Lake Linden was enjoying coffee at the Conglomerate Cafe as the group ducked in for a quick set.

"I thought they were awesome," she said. "It was really nice to see someone doing something festive. It was really enjoyable. Their singing was nice, too."
