BARAGA - Due to a high number of ill students, Baraga Area Schools were closed today and will be closed Friday to allow time for students to recover and custodial staff to thoroughly sanitize district facilities.
"We've had a large number of students out with a variety of symptoms. Fever is the most prominent symptom," Superintendent Jennifer Lynn said via phone this morning. "We got to a high number (today) - we had 98 (of just fewer than 500 in the district)."
About 25 percent of students in upper elementary grades and more than that in grades K-2 are absent due to illness. Students and teachers are exempt today and Friday, but custodial and administrative staff will work as usual.
"We will also stay closed (Friday)," Lynn said.
The district will not have to make the days up since it has five days to use for illness/weather cancellations.
"We haven't taken any snow days, but it's the same pool of days," Lynn said. "We'll have to see what the weather does the rest of the year."
The district will continue to post updates to its website (baragaschools.org) and "Baraga Area Schools" Facebook page.
Additionally, tonight's varsity and junior varsity home boys' basketball games against Chassell have been postponed to Dec. 20 in Chassell. The next game between Chassell and Baraga, which is scheduled for Feb. 19, will now be played in Baraga instead of Chassell. Tonight's originally scheduled junior high boys' basketball game will not be rescheduled.
