CALUMET - Calumet proved strongest down the stretch in a close WestPAC opener, holding on for a 44-42 home win over West Iron County.
The Copper Kings, who trailed by four with 2 1/2 minutes to play, took the lead for good on Terra Erkkila's jump-stop basket inside a minute to go. Lexie Rowe added a bucket on the next trip for a 3-point lead, and after the Wykons split a pair of free throws, the teams traded points, setting the visitors up for a last possession under their own basket with five seconds left. Kylee Erickson drew only glass on her 25-foot runner at the buzzer as the Kings went to 2-0 overall.
Calumet dedicated the win to teammate Ellen Twardzik, who had knee surgery while team played West Iron for the second year in a row. Coach Don Hill complimented his seniors, Erkkila and Kristy Lasanen (who scored seven of her nine points in the fourth quarter) for pulling through in the clutch.
"When the rubber hit the road at the end of the game, we were able to really make them work on every possession," he said.
Rowe led all scorers with 13 points. Erickson paced the Wykons with 12.
Calumet, which won the JV game, plays Tuesday at Hancock.
