EWEN - Illegal drugs and paraphernalia were found during a search of Ewen-Trout Creek school Friday morning.

The state police were contacted after administrators received approval from the E-TC Board of Education to invite drug sniffing dogs into the building. The Michigan State Police K-9 teams from the Calumet Post and the Michigan State Police Hometown Security Team assisted in the search.

State police sergeant Allen Graham of the Wakefield Post said more than one suspect has been interviewed.

"We believe charges should be issued probably within a week," he said.

The investigation is ongoing.

E-TC Schools Superintendent Loren Vannest said the state police and dogs arrived at the school just after 9 a.m. Friday. They took about 20 minutes to conduct a sweep of the building.

According to Vannest, a marijuana pipe and a small quantity of marijuana was located in a student's locker.

"A student was suspended for five days in connection with possession of drugs," Vannest said.

The dogs also detected milder indications of drugs on campus, but no charges were made in connection to those.

Vannest also said there will be ongoing occasional sweeps of the school by drug sniffing dogs. Vannest believes this will help curb any on-campus drug use.

"Suspensions and legal actions in connection with any illict drugs found on campus will further deter illicit drug possession," Vannest said.
