LL-H library gets $25K grant

LAKE LINDEN - With recent decreases in state funding for public school districts, it's become more difficult for places like school libraries to get much-needed repairs and upgrades.

The Lake Linden-Hubbell School/Public Library was no different, as it has recently become in need of repairs to carpet and upgrades to technology and equipment. With the budget crunch, LL-H Public Schools Superintendent Craig Sundblad could only plan to help the library little by little.

However, because of the efforts of Public Library Director Joan Schick, the library recently was awarded a 2012 Reinhardt Library Fund Grant for $25,000. Now, renovations can quickly begin and the library will get the help it needed to stay current.

"It's going to replace our carpeting, which is about 12 to 15 years old and is something that definitely needed to be done," Sundblad said. "We're going to add computers, replace some outdated equipment and renovate the children's room."

Over the summer, Schick developed several ideas and earmarks for the library's needs - shelving, carpeting, furniture, signage, paint and book return boxes, among others - and developed a grant proposal.

"We wouldn't have gotten this if it wasn't for her," Sundblad said. "She took the initiative and put a lot of effort into it."

Because the library is open to the public and the school, it was eligible for the grant, named after Robert Charles Reinhardt. Reinhardt was a 30-year veteran of the Dow Chemical Company who developed an interest in helping small, rural libraries and believed library resources should be available to everyone, according to a press release.

"This grant also benefits the public," Sundblad said. "It's open to the public (Tuesday and Thursday evenings) and during the school day as well."

Renovations will begin at the library as soon as possible.
