The Daily Mining Gazette

CHASSELL - Troy Kinnunen scored eight of his 22 points in the fourth quarter as Jeffers pulled out a road win over rivals Chassell Thursday, 43-39.

"It wasn't a pretty game. I'm sure, for us for sure, we didn't play well, we didn't shoot well at all, but that's mostly because Jeffers played a good defense too," Chassell coach Steve Spahn said.

Jeffers established a six-point halftime lead, but Chassell clawed back to within a tie after three.

In the fourth, the Jets outscored the Panthers 16-12, making three treys to Chassell's one.

The Panthers, idle for nine days since their season-opening win at Watersmeet, didn't have a good shooting night, going 15-for-48 from the field. Chassell (1-1, 0-1) got a team-best 11 points from Carson Ryynanen and nine apiece from Josh Pietila and Evan Huhta.

Chassell is at Ontonagon Monday, while Jeffers (2-1, 2-0) is at Hancock.

DOLLAR BAY - Aaron Kaikko scored 16 of his career-high 27 points in the third quarter, leading Ontonagon out of danger and past the Bays.

"We didn't do a very good job of recognizing where he was in our zone. We didn't do a good job of getting out to him. He's a spot shooter and he hit the open shots and didn't miss," Dollar Bay coach Jesse Kentala said.

Kaikko hit five of his team's six threes.

Dollar Bay was competitive through the first half of the Copper Country Conference game, going into the locker room down just two, but gave up 21 points in the third quarter and scored none in the fourth quarter.

"We have a lot to learn, we're young, we have to be stronger with the ball," Kentala said. "Sometimes the ball doesn't go in. We've had some of those quarters in the early going this season."

Cam Ringler led the Bays (0-3, 0-2 CCC) with seven points. DB is at Republic-Michigamme Monday.

The Gladiators (1-2, 1-0 CCC), who won the JV game and also put Kyle Karttunen (11) and Tony Soumis (10) in double figures, host Chassell Monday.
