IRON RIVER - Houghton bounced back from its first loss of the year with a vengeance, holding host West Iron County to single digits in all four quarters of a 57-25 rout.
"We've had a good week and a half of practice and I thought we had strong defensive intensity. We set some defensive goals before the game and the girls met the goals," Houghton coach Julie Filpus said.
One of those goals was limiting WIC guard Kylee Erickson. She led the Wykons in scoring, but with just nine points.
On the offensive end, Houghton had a 24-12 lead by the half and expanded it from there, getting a balanced effort with three girls in double figures. Elisa Jurmu led the way with 18 points, while Kelsie Richards added 11 and Natalie Datto 10.
"With these girls, it's been a challenge in our first three games to get them to have some patience on offense," Filpus said. "I thought tonight we were more patient and a little more selective in the shots that we took."
The Gremlins (3-1, 1-1 WestPAC) drilled seven of 12 3-point attempts. Houghton hosts Escanaba Tuesday.
