EWEN - The Ewen-Trout Creek boys basketball team started cold on a chilly Friday night, but heated up quickly after a few fiery speeches from coach Brad Besonen. The Panthers took down Hurley (Wis.) 72-63 with shooting guard Dillon Gordon leading the way with 35 points.
"(Hurley) came out with a lot of energy and for whatever reason we were flat," Besonen said. It took a couple timeouts in first quarter to address intensity issues. ... In the second quarter we forced some turnovers though, got some good looks and knocked them down."
Gordon knocked down five threes, and Mike Borseth chipped in 18 points as Ewen outscored Hurley 23-9 in the second quarter.
"He felt that he shot poorly, but he still shot 50 percent. He is just a great scorer," Besonen said of Gordon.
