Outside shots not falling for Finlandia women

HANCOCK - Any time a basketball team misses 26 of 30 shots from three-point territory, the results aren't going to be good.

Such was the case for the Finlandia University women's basketball team Saturday afternoon against Alverno College in a 67-55 defeat at Paavo Nurmi Gym.

"We came out flat for some reason ... and we didn't ... compete in the first half," FU coach Jason Keefer said. "Alverno is too good a team to get away with that."

Finlandia's top three scorers, Hailey Gervais, Marissa Burke and Paige Yoho, were limited to 17 combined points in the contest.

Only some good work off the bench from Adrianna Osuna, Kaylin Rajala and Emma Cole kept the Lions in the game.

At one point late in the game, the locals sliced the deficit to 57-51 on a hoop by Brierra Ruska.

Alverno - Anna Boteva 6, Kristen Speerschneider 19, Kayla Kennedy 11, Devon Gorman 8, Jamie Hoemke 13, Ashley Berry 4, Kaitlin Schaeren 8. FG: 20-59; FT: 22-31; Rebounds: 43 (Hoemke 11); Fouls: 11; Fouled out; None; 3-point FG: Anna Boteva 2, Speerschneider 2, Hoemke 1.

But after holding the Inferno on two straight trips, FU missed a wide-open layup and then committed a turnover.

"They (Lions) made a nice comeback," Alverno coach Brad Duckworth commented. "We knew they would because they're a well-coached team and play hard. But we were able to to get a couple of big baskets."

Junior Jamie Hoemke scored five points in the late run by the Wisconsin squad.

"We've had a lot of balance this season," Duckworth noted. "Today, it was Jamie (Hoemke) and Kristen Speerschnieder who came through for us."

Alverno jumped out to a 24-9 lead midway through the opening half, beating the Lions up the court repeatedly.

Cole, a recent spark for Finlandia, and Osunna helped their team cut the lead to 35-25 before the invaders grabbed a 43-29 halftime margin.

Alverno increased the lead to as much as 20 points in the second portion of the game before Finlandia made its in final rally.

"We just waited too long to start playing today, it was as simple as that," Keefer said.

Osuna led the now 4-6 Lions with 10 points, while Burke managed nine points and eight rebounds. Cole and Ruska tossed in eight more points, while Rajala (Negaunee) had seven points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

Alverno, which is 5-4 so far, received 19 points and 10 boards from Speerschneider. Hoemke also had a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards and Kayla Kennedy chipped in 11 markers.
