PELKIE - Mark A. Velmer, 50, of Pelkie, died on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at the Mather Nursing Home in Ishpeming following a short illness. He had been residing in Pelkie with his father and caregiver, Melvin Velmer, for the past few years.
Mark was born in L'Anse on July 24, 1962, a son of Melvin Velmer and Eleanor Mantila and was a 1980 graduate of Baraga High School.
Mark worked various jobs in Baraga and Houghton Counties.
He was a fan of the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Red Wings. He also enjoyed listening to a variety of music.
Surviving are his mother, Eleanor Taylor and her special friend, Dennis "Otto" Bloom of Hancock; his father, Melvin Velmer of Pelkie; two sons and one daughter, Lucas (Mallory) Velmer, stationed with the U.S. Army in Cameron, N.C., Justina Velmer of Hancock and Jacob LaFave of Hubbell; two brothers, Dennis (Julie) Velmer and Randy (Barb) Velmer of Alston; a sister-in-law, Diane Velmer of L'Anse; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mark was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne, in June 2009.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19, in the Mountain View Mortuary in South Range with Pastor David Weber to officiate. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until time of services on Wednesday in the mortuary. Interment will be in the Pelkie Cemetery.
