Illness closes local schools

L'ANSE - L'Anse Area Schools, Sacred Heart School, Arvon Township Schools and the BHK L'Anse Center and E.B. Holman School are closed today due to illness.

L'Anse Area Schools let out at 11:55 Monday morning, and the district is closed today and Wednesday as well with "significant numbers of absences due to flu-like symptoms," according to Superintendent Ray Pasquali.

Elementary school absence rates were approaching 30 percent Monday, and junior/senior high absences were approaching 20 percent of the student populations, and Pasquali also reported several staff members out with illness.

"Sickness in the schools has been lingering for two to three weeks, and has now reached a critical mass," Pasquali said. "As a result we need to give our students and staff time to recover. Part of it is to prevent it from spreading further, so we took this unusual step."

School will resume as normal Thursday and Friday before the district's Christmas break.

Monday's school board meeting was also cancelled and rescheduled to combine with the January meeting on the second Monday of the month (Jan. 14) instead of the typical third Monday date. Athletic events were also postponed. For rescheduled dates, visit lanseschools.org.

Students at Stanton Township will return to school Wednesday, but the district will not have classes Friday as it starts its holiday break.

Sacred Heart School did not have an illness problem, but due to bus sharing with LAS, the school follows the L'Anse district schedule.
