HUBBELL - Elizabeth (Mrs. Lawrence) Gilles, 102, died Monday morning, Dec. 17, 2012, at Our Lady of Mercy Nursing Home in Hubbell where she had resided for the past six years and The Bluffs in Houghton for the previous six years.
Elizabeth was born in L'Anse on Oct. 16, 1910, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Gauthier, growing up in L'Anse and attending the L'Anse schools.
In 1929, she was married to Lawrence J. Gilles and resided in Houghton until moving to Lake Linden in 1941 where Lawrence opened the Lakes Pharmacy in 1939 and the Lake Food Market in 1941.
Elizabeth was actively involved in church activities all of her life, was a member and past president of St. Ann Altar Society of St. Joseph's Church in Lake Linden. She was active in promoting the Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima, advocating daily rosary and devotion to wearing the Brown Scapular of the Carmelite Order.
She was a member of the Houghton County Deanery, Council of Catholic Women, serving a term as Chair of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine.
She was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus, Lake Linden, serving as president during its tenth anniversary year. She was also a long time member of the Houghton County Home Extension Group and Services Club in Lake Linden.
Elizabeth was a loving mother and grandmother who loved to cook and bake for her family who looked forward to the 40 pounds of her wonderful fruitcake that she made each Christmas. She was a gifted painter, painting many beautiful figurines and craft creations over the years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence on July 23, 2000, after 71 years of marriage; by five half-sisters; one half-brother; her son, Lawrence (Larry) and his wife, Gladys; and one great-granddaughter.
She is survived by three children, Peter (Deanna) of Elkhart, Ind., Michael (Marion) of Lake Linden and Sun City, Ariz. and Patricia (Melvin) Dessellier of Lake Linden; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held in St. Joseph Church, Lake Linden, at 11 a.m. Friday with Fr. Francis Dobrzenski to officiate. Visitation will be in the Pearce Funeral Home in Lake Linden on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in the spring in Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.
