DOLLAR BAY - Eric F. Jurgensen, 50, died peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, at his home from complications following his victories over cancer.
Eric was born on Nov. 2, 1962, in Syracuse, N.Y., and moved to Calumet when he was 8 years old. He attended Calumet and Lake Linden schools and graduated in 1980 from Thomas Corcoran High School in Syracuse, N.Y. Eric furthered his education at Michigan Technological University and Butte College in California, and owned a taxi/courier business in Chico, Calif. He returned to the Copper Country in 1999 to raise his son and start up a similar business, but was diagnosed with leukemia in 2000. Since 2003, Eric was a consumer representative on the board of Upper Peninsula Health Plan.
Eric loved skiing, tennis, bowling, music, cars, computer games, movies, socializing on Friday nights at the KBC, and was a major trivia competitor at Bleachers. He was always upbeat and smiling in the face of adversity.
Eric was preceded in death by his grandparents and his step-father John Yaniskivis.
He is survived by his son, Leif; daughter, Brooke; mother, Sonya Yaniskivis; father and step-mother, Martin and Mary Jurgensen; sister, Laura; brother, Garth; niece, Macy, step-grandmother, Mayme Frantti; and aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Per his wishes, Eric will be cremated, and a celebration of his life will be held on his favorite Lake Superior beach this coming summer.
