EBEN JUNCTION - Superior Central changed its defense and changed its fortunes Wednesday night.
After trying to contain Ewen-Trout Creek senior standout Dillon Gordon with a modified box-and-one in the first half and giving up 32 points to him and 41 to the Panthers, the Cougars tried something different, outscoring E-TC 21-5 in the fourth quarter en route to a 70-60 non-conference win.
"Second half, they were running a zone where they were doubling a lot and scrambling out of it, trying to create chaos and had a lot of success with it," E-TC coach Brad Besonen said.
Gordon scored only three points in the second half and the rattled Panthers had just 19. After Gordon's 35, the next-best Panthers, Nick Hearns and Lane Brown, had just six points apiece. The Panthers committed a majority of their 24 turnovers in the second half.
"We've got to have another one or two guys handling with confidence on the floor," Besonen said.
Furthermore, Superior Central got to the line consistently in the second half, making 15 free throws and putting several E-TC players in foul trouble.
The loss drops the Panthers to 3-2 overall.
Matt Verbrigghe led Superior Central with 22 points. The Cougars had three players in double figures.
