Calumet girls take first defeat

EAGLE RIVER, Wis. - Calumet's shooting touch appeared to still be on Christmas break Friday and it cost the Copper Kings their first loss of the girls' basketball season.

Calumet (5-1) knocked down only 23 percent of its field-goal attempts in a 52-34 non-league defeat to Northland Pines, Wis.

"We needed one basket to get us over the top and never seemed to find it," Calumet coach Don Hill said.

The Copper Kings fell behind 11-2 early and though they rallied to within a point by the third quarter, the offense never found a high enough gear.

"(At halftime) I thought we were winning in every statistical category, we had one less turnover, we had two more rebounds, we'd taken 30 shots to their 20, and we were still down by six," Hill said.

The Eagles made the most of 16 fourth-quarter free-throw attempts to put the game away.

"We gave up too many second-chance points and that ended up being the difference why we had to foul them instead of them fouling us," Hill said.

Kristy Lasanen's nine points led Calumet, which won the JV game.

Ashley Mai paced Northland Pines with 13 points.

Calumet's next action is a make-up game Thursday night at home against L'Anse.
