ONKALO'S CORNER - Janet D. Laitila, 73, a resident of Onkalo's Corner Road, died on Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at Marquette General Hospital, following a short illness.
She was born June 17, 1939, in Hancock, a daughter of the late William and Eleanor (Fontaine) McLean and graduated in 1957 from Houghton High School.
On July 16, 1960, she was married to Carl W. Laitila in Baltic.
Janet worked at the former Central Foods in Houghton, Paoli's Market and Rugani's Market in South Range, the JC Penney and Sears stores when they were both located in downtown Houghton and several other various retail stores. She also worked for Portage Home Health and other home health care agencies, and, prior to retiring, worked as a home health aide for Keweenaw Aspirus Home Health.
Janet attended the First United Methodist Church in Hancock. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Trillium Chapter 304 and the Salvation Army. She enjoyed knitting, reading and crocheting afghans which she gave to family and friends.
Surviving are her husband, Carl of Onkalo's Corner; two sons, Jeffrey and Mark, both of Onkalo's Corner; a daughter, Sandra ("Sandy") (Milton "Dukie") Pyykkonen of Pelkie; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, in the Mountain View Mortuary in South Range with Pastor Ken Toth to officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services in the mortuary. Spring burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.
