L'ANSE - Calumet's offense sputtered to life before L'Anse's, and the Copper Kings claimed a 44-33 WestPAC boys' basketball victory on the road Thursday night.
"They play very good defense and they had hands in our faces. Not only did we shoot poor but their defense had something to do with it," L'Anse coach Mike Ostermeyer said.
It was a bad night all around for the Purple Hornets, now 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the WestPAC. Not only did L'Anse fail to score more than 10 points in any quarter, but leading scorer Jimmy Veker (21 ppg) suffered an ankle injury late in the first quarter and did not return.
Still, L'Anse led 15-13 at halftime until Paul Torola sparked the Kings to life, scoring nine of his 14 points in the third quarter as Calumet seized control.
"He made some tough shots with guys in his face. He's a very good player," Ostermeyer said.
Chad Sturos led Calumet with a career-high 15 points. The Copper Kings (4-2, 2-0 WestPAC) host Ontonagon Monday night.
L'Anse, which won the JV game, got a game-high 12 from Daniel Perrow. The Purple Hornets, who last played Dec. 10, have a quick turnaround tonight for a road game at Ishpeming.

BARAGA - A 31-point night from Troy Kinnunen keyed Jeffers to a Copper Country Conference road win.
Kinnunen pushed his scoring average to 26.7 in the straightforward victory with his third game of 30 or more this season.
"He moved around a lot, they set a lot of screens for him, we weren't communicating on them and he got himself open," Baraga coach Doug Hodges said.
The Jets also got a strong 18 from Alex Outinen. Up 32-23 at the half, they grew the lead to 16 after three quarters and pulled away in the fourth.
Baraga did mark its best offensive output of the season and a season high of 15 points from Zach Owens.
"This game, we improved offensively, but defensively, we took a step backwards," Hodges said.
The Vikings fall to 0-4 (0-3 CCC) going into a game at Hancock Monday.
Jeffers, now 4-2 and 3-0 in the CCC, ends a run of five straight road games with a league game at Lake Linden-Hubbell Jan. 10. The Jets won the JV game 39-29.
