ISHPEMING - Ishpeming isn't in midseason form quite yet. But everybody it's playing is.

Competing in just their second game of the season, the Hematites pulled away in the third quarter for a 72-56 victory over L'Anse on Friday night.

The Purple Hornets (2-3) grabbed a 33-29 halftime lead by sinking 9 of 12 three-pointers.

"We played some very, very good defense in the first half, but you couldn't have told it by the way they were hitting their threes," Ishpeming coach John Tiziani said. "I told our guys at halftime when we get the rebound, we're going to push the ball.

"I think L'Anse was absolutely exhausted by the end of the third quarter."

And probably disheartened after getting outscored 23-6 to fall behind 52-39.

Senior Joey Lyle led the Hematites (1-1) with 17 points, while junior teammate Derek DeCaire added 16 points and eight rebounds and another junior, Bobby Zhulkie, had 14 points.

Dan Perrow paced the Purple Hornets with 15 points, including four threes, while Keith Denomie and Jacob Ostermeyer had 13 apiece. Denomie made three treys and Ostermeyer one as L'Anse made 11 triples altogether.

Ishpeming also won the JV game, 58-30.

Ontonagon 29

ONTONAGON - The Gladiators could never find their shooting touch Friday night, and it resulted in a double-digit loss to the Hawks.

"We, offensively, could not get anything going all night. We struggled offensively. We struggled mightily," Ontonagon coach Tim Nelson said.

The Gladiators only made nine of 55 two-point attempts and one of 17 attempts from downtown.

Still, the game remained close after a low-scoring first half, with R-M holding a narrow 13-12 lead. But, the Hawks found their offense first, pulling ahead 26-21 after three and icing the game by making 11 fourth-quarter free throws as part of a 17-8 final frame.

"That was due to our attempt to create some turnovers by pressuring the ball," Nelson said, but even when those turnovers were forced, they didn't translate to points.

"We missed lay-ups, we missed uncontested shots in the paint. Until those shots are dropping, we're going to struggle on offense," Nelson said.

Aaron Kaikko's 14 points led the way for the Glads. No other teammate had more than five. Republic-Michigamme had three players with at least nine points, led by Jonatan Lygdeman's 10.
