Unsung heroes help Jeffers boys

PAINESDALE - A pair of unsung heroes assisted some regular standouts as Jeffers took care of Ontonagon 60-39 in Copper Country Conference boys' basketball Thursday.

Jet coach Duane Snell pointed to sophomores Zachary Nicholas and Myles Rajala for having excellent nights.

"We had a couple sophomores tonight play like men," he said.

Snell credited Nicholas, who had seven points, with a solid floor game, while Rajala had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds (nine offensive) and 6-for-8 free-throw shooting.

Ontonagon (2-7, 2-3 CCC) hung around through the first half, trailing 22-18 at the break, but Alex Outinen hit back-to-back triples early in the third to give the Jets (5-4, 4-1 CCC) some separation.

Troy Kinnunen led all scorers with 21 points for Jeffers, which hit seven treys among four players. Outinen added 15.

Jeffers is at L'Anse Tuesday.

For Ontonagon, David Pollard and Aaron Kaikko co-led offensively with 12 points.

BARAGA - The U.P.'s last undefeated boys' basketball team stayed that way Thursday with a straightforward CCC road win.

LL-H put up 20 points in each of the first two quarters to salt the win, it's ninth straight, away early.

Tyler Roose knocked down three treys for LL-H, finishing with 19 points.

Chris Goodreau paced the Vikings with nine.

The Lakes (9-0, 6-0 CCC) face a stern test of their unbeaten mark Tuesday night at home against Ewen-Trout Creek.

For Baraga (0-8, 0-5), the next outing is a trip to Calumet Tuesday.
