HOUGHTON - Lake Linden-Hubbell alum Travis Ambuehl is the new school-record holder in the pole vault for St. Scholastica after a meet in Bemidji, Minn., Saturday.
Ambuehl cleared 4.45 meters (14 feet, 7 1/4 inches) and finished second in the event at the Super 8 Open.
The Saints team will compete at the Warren Bowlus Open Saturday at Wisconsin-Stout.
Both basketball teams at Gogebic Community College have had successful seasons and current 16-3 records.
The GCC men dropped the St. Scholastica JVs 86-61 Monday, getting seven points and two rebounds from Ewen-Trout Creek alum Jordan LaPlant. T.J. Schmaus of Ontonagon added three points.
Saturday, GCC took down Silver Lake College 79-47 with help from 10 points and four boards from LaPlant. Schmaus had four boards.
The GCC women defeated Silver Lake 71-62, with L'Anse's Autumn Swanson and Dollar Bay's Adeline Kariainen both seeing spot duty.
Laurium's Ben Storm had the primary assist on a third period goal for the East team during Wednesday's United States Hockey League Top Prospects Game.
He helped John Hayden (U.S. National Under-18 Team) score East's only goal in a 2-1 defeat held in the home arena of Storm's Muskegon Lumberjacks.
Storm has a point in two of his last three games, including an assist in Muskegon's most recent outing, a 4-1 win vs. Indiana Saturday.
Storm now has five assists in 27 games for Muskegon, which is 21-13-5 and in third in the USHL Eastern Conference.
Muskegon plays at home Friday against Dubuque.
Calumet alum Ben Johnson and the Windsor Spitfires have won four straight games.
Johnson had an assist in Windsor's best win of the season thus far, a 5-2 road win at London Friday. The Knights, with eight losses, have the league's best record.
Johnson's scored his most recent goal Jan. 13 at Oshawa and has 12 goals and 10 assists in 45 games.
The Spitfires are back at .500 with a 19-19-1 mark, and though they're four points out of the playoff races, have two games in hand on the next two teams in the standings. Windsor plays both of those teams this weekend, with a home game vs. Plymouth tonight and a trip to Sault Ste. Marie Saturday.
Levi Erkkila (Calumet) of the North American Hockey League Michigan Warriors picked up his fifth assist of the season Friday as Michigan won 3-1 at Johnstown. He has four goals and five assists in 35 games.
Defenseman Jesse Junttila had an assist, his third of the season Jan. 12 when his Kalamazoo Junior K-Wings defeated the Warriors in Flint.
