HOUGHTON - Students in grades 4 through 12 across the Upper Peninsula are invited to participate in the District 1 regional competition for National History Day.
District 1 is comprised of 12 counties in the Central and Western Upper Peninsula. The District 1 Competition is set for March 2 at Michigan Technological University in Houghton.
Students are invited to submit a project in one of the following genres: individual exhibit, group exhibit, individual website, group website, individual documentary, group documentary, individual performance, group performance or individual paper. Students in grades 4 and 5 will compete in the Youth Division, students in grades 6-8 will compete in the Junior Division while students in grades 9-12 will compete in the Senior Division.

The work must contain primary source materials centered on the theme of "Turning Points in History: People, Ideas, Events."
Students who advance from the District 1 competition will go on to the State final competition of National History Day, to be held April 27 at Saginaw Valley State University, Michigan. Students who successfully compete at the state final will compete at National History Day set for June 9-13 at the University of Maryland in College Park, Md.
District 1 is comprised of 12 counties in the Central and Western Upper Peninsula. The District 1 competition is sponsored annually by the MTU Department of Social Sciences, the MTU Archives and Copper Country Historical Collections, the Quincy Mine Hoist Association and the Historical Society of Michigan.
Students need not be sponsored by a teacher in order to compete, but an adult sponsor is required, such as a parent, church group leader, girl or boy scout troop leader, etc.

Judges are also needed for the March 2 competition in Houghton.
