Renee Sue (Banfield) Winnen

LAURIUM - Renee Sue Winnen, age 49, a resident of Laurium, passed away at her home on Monday morning, Jan. 28, 2013.

She was born in Laurium on July 2, 1963, a daughter of William and Joanne Banfield. She attended Calumet High School.

Renee lived in the Copper Country for most of her life. After her son, Jake, was born, she lived in Texas for a short time, but missed Calumet and moved back shortly after.

She worked as a waitress at the Hut until her illness prevented her. Renee fought a long battle with cancer, beginning in 1990.

She enjoyed camping, barbequing and family outings. She was known as a Hockey Mom and for her cooking. Renee touched many people's lives and her smile will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her father, William Banfield.

Renee is survived by her son, Jake (Jamie) Haataja of Osceola; her special longtime friend, Steve Stukel of Laurium; two grandchildren, Lincoln and Harper; her mother, Joanne Banfield of Calumet; her brother, Jan (Kay) Banfield of Calumet; nieces, Megan and Amanda Banfield, both of Minnesota; a great-nephew, Damien Banfield; a great-niece, Nathaya Polk; as well as her cat, Molly.

Renee's family would like to thank Dr. McConnon for his excellent and compassionate care.

A memorial service will be held for Renee at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1 in the Erickson Crowley Funeral Home in Calumet with Pastor Ken Toth to officiate. Friends may call in the funeral home on Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. Spring burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Ahmeek.
