The Daily Mining Gazette

CALUMET?- The Calumet Wolverines defeated the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 6-4 and the Madison Blues 11-2 this weekend to earn four points in Great Lakes Hockey League play.

The weekend sweep moves the Wolverines to 6-4-1, good for fifth place in the league. The team only has nine games remaining, including two home games.

Friday night against the Ice Dogs (8-5-1), the Wolverines got a three-point effort from second-year forward Darren Bausano. Bausano scored the team's fourth goal and assisted on Zach Babcock's game winner midway through the second period.

Saturday night, the Wolverines avenged a 3-2 loss to Madison (5-6-1) the week prior with an excellent offensive outing. Eleven different players found the back of the net, and rookie defenseman Josh Harju had five assists. Jeff Erkkila, Eric Bausano, Logan Rastello and Byron Parks also had multiple assists in the game.

Ryan Patrick started both games, and has now started nine of the team's 11 games. He leads the GLHL with 323 saves.

In Houghton, the Portage Lake Pioneers came from behind to ensure a four-point weekend of their own.

Saturday, the Pioneers trailed Fox Cities 4-3 after two periods, but got an equalizer from Evan Kangas at 9:33 of the third period, followed less than two minutes later by the eventual game-winner off the stick of Charlie Turner.

The goal was Turner's second of the game. His first-period tally complemented those of Ryan Sullivan and Blake Miller.

Mike Wuthrich made 23 saves for the Pioneers.

Friday, the Pioneers scored four times in the third to break open their game with Madison and win it 7-4.

PL?trailed 3-1 early in the second period until Pete Rouleau and Sullivan bagged late goals to tie it up.

Madison scored just 40 seconds into the third to take the lead, but it was short-lived, as Al L'Esperance scored unassisted at 2:51 to tie it up again before Sullivan scored twice?(completing his hat trick)?and Brady Olson once to help the Pioneers pull away.

Wuthrich turned away 57 shots.

At 9-2-0, PL?is third in the GLHL, just a point behind second place.
