February 5, 2013

HOUGHTON - Houghton will have to wait until next week to take over the No. 1 spot in the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Class ABC girls' basketball poll.

The Gremlins defeated Marquette Monday, but the fifth poll of the season had already been taken and was awaiting its release today.

So, for now, Marquette remains No. 1 on all five ballots and Houghton No. 2.

Another local team was able to make its move this week, as Calumet is up a spot to No. 3. Not only did the Copper Kings collect wins over Hancock and L'Anse last week, but previous No. 3 Negaunee took losses, both to Marquette last Monday and a 44-30 defeat at Norway Friday, their first in Mid-Peninsula Conference play.

Kingsford also leapfrogged the Miners to No. 4. The Flivvers (10-3) defeated previously unbeaten Forest Park 52-51 in Crystal Falls thanks to Lauren Smith's basket with 10 seconds to play. They also had a one possession game in Iron County three nights previous, being West Iron County 43-41 last Monday.

Calumet had 13 poll points and Kingsford 12.

In this week's Associated Press state poll, SC jumps to No. 3 behind St. Ignace and Lansing Christian, with FP in a tie for fourth.

On the boys' side, Ewen-Trout Creek is up a spot in Class D to No. 3 after a solid win over WestPAC leader Houghton Friday.

Cedarville (12-1) and Brimley (11-2) continue to hold the top spots for the Eastern U.P. with E-TC in third with 14 poll points. North Central (9-2) is a clear No. 4 with 10 points, while Carney-Nadeau (9-3) emerges from a logjam at the bottom of the ranking. The Wolves' four points were good enough for fifth ahead of Bessemer (two), Superior Central (one) and Lake Linden-Hubbell (one).

Only the vote count changed in Class ABC boys this week. Marquette and Negaunee are 1-2 on all ballots, followed by a Gwinn team that lost to Negaunee Thursday but didn't lose a spot in the ranking.

The Modeltowners (9-4) have 12 poll points, followed by Kingsford's 10. Ironwood (9-3) and Sault Ste. Marie (9-4) remain tied on four points.
