The Daily Mining Gazette

STANTON TWP. - Jayne M. Johnson, 58, of Liminga, passed away in her home after a third battle with cancer on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, with her family at her side.

She was born Mar. 29, 1954, in Trenton, Mich. to Nedra (Moss) Johnson and Roy "Bud" Johnson. Jayne grew up in Lincoln Park, Mich., and graduated from Lincoln Park High School. She attended Eastern Michigan University earning BA and MA degrees in elementary and special education.

Jayne began her teaching career in the Wayne County Intermediate School District. She then moved to the Copper Country where she worked in the Houghton-Portage School District for 30 years as a special education and kindergarten teacher. She retired in 2010.

Jayne married her husband, Richard (Rich) Johnson in 1984, and together they raised three children, Erik (Becky) Johnson of South Range, Emily of Traverse City and Alex of Mt. Pleasant. She is also survived by two grandsons, Kameron and Kolby of South Range; her mother, Nedra of Jacobsville; and her brother, Jay of Las Vegas, Nev.

Jayne was preceded in death by her father, Roy "Bud" Johnson.

Those fortunate to have Jayne as a friend, knew her as a caring, funny, quirky person with a big heart and smile. She was full of spunk with lots of postitive energy. She was kind and forgiving and always had time for everyone. She championed the underdog and opened her heart and home becoming a second Mom to many. She loved teaching and her classroom was filled with activity. Her love of children and animals was notorious. She will be remembered and missed by many.

A memorial service officiated by Pastor Bucky Beach will be held at 1 p.m. next Sunday, Feb. 17, in the Houghton Elementary School gymnasium, followed by a celebration of Jayne's life at 2:30 p.m. in the Brownstone Hall in Atlantic Mine. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the school.

It is because of Jayne's love of animals, her family has suggested, in lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials be made in her name to the Copper Country Humane Society, P.O. Box 453, Houghton, MI 49931.

Arrangements are being handled by the Mountain View Mortuary in South Range, Antila Funeral Service, Inc. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at antilafuneral.com.
