Helen K. Koski

MARQUETTE - Helen K. Koski, 78, of Marquette, died Monday evening, Feb. 11, 2013, at her home in the comfort of her family and Lake Superior Hospice.

Helen was born Apr. 2, 1934, in Florida Location, a daughter of the late Onni and Hulda (Martti) Kaarre.

She was a 1952 graduate of Osceola Township High School. Helen received a Liberal Arts degree from Suomi College in 1954 and graduated from Northern Michigan University in 1956 with a teaching certificate.

Helen served her community by teaching in the Republic School System for over 30 years. She was also the church organist for Bethany Lutheran Church for many of those years.

After retirement, she moved to Marquette where she was a vital member of her new community. As a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, she sang in the choir, served on the church council, was a circle member, participated in several mission trips to Columbia and was a dedicated Room at the Inn co-ordinator.

Helen's love of music was a driving force in her life and she was a member of the Marquette Choral Society for many years. She volunteered for many other events, organizations and committees too numerous to mention.

Survivors include her four loving daughters, Charlene (Michael) Young of Virginia Beach, Virg., Eunice (Larry) Bertocchi of Gwinn, Kay (Lars) Anderson of Steamboat Springs, Colo. and Katherine (Larry) Holsworth of Sagola; 12 grandchildren, Amanda Humphrey, Greg (Jen) Young, Brad, Andy and Erin Bertocchi, Shelby (Nolan) Johnson, Dylan (Amber) Anderson, Kyle (Heather) Holsworth, Lauren (Kelly) Reed, Barry Holsworth, Luke (Sydney) Holsworth and Lane Holsworth; 12 great-grandchilden; one sister, Miriam Hojnacki; two brothers, Norman (Bea) Kaarre and Rueben Kaarre; numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Stuart Koski in 1997; and four siblings, Ruth Mykkanen, Sigrid Rothman, Paul Kaarre and Verna Kaarre.

Friends may call at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home on Friday, Feb. 15 from 10 a.m. to noon. A memorial service will take place at Messiah Lutheran Church on Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. David Van Kley and Rev. Amanda Kossow to officiate. Spring burial will take place in Northland Chapel Gardens.

Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are kindly asked to consider Lake Superior Hospice Association, Room at the Inn or Messiah Lutheran Church in Mrs. Koski's memory.
