Hazel M. Schnabel

HOUGHTON - Hazel M. Schnabel, 96, a long time resident of Houghton, died on Saturday morning, Feb. 16, 2013, at PortagePointe in Hancock.

She was born Nov. 15, 1916, in Lake Linden, a daughter of the late Napoleon and Josephine (Rheault) Dupuis. She was a graduate of Lake Linden-Hubbell High School in 1934.

She married Walter H. Schnabel on May 2, 1942, and he died in 2002. The couple had lived in Hancock for a couple of years before residing most of their lives in Houghton. She most recently had lived in Heritage Manor before going to PortagePointe.

Hazel was a faithful member of St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church in Hancock. She was an avid bowler and also enjoyed golf, baking (especially bread), sewing, crocheting, gardening and fishing.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Jim and Chuck; and sisters, Eleanor and Olive.

Hazel is survived by her son, Brach Schnabel of Houghton; two granddaughters, Jennifer (Michael) Brost of Huntsville, Ala. and Mary Schnabel of Houghton; several nieces and nephews.

There will be no visitation or funeral. A graveside service will be held in the spring in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Lake Linden with Rev. Fr. John Martignon to officiate.
