ISHPEMING - An unfortunate turn of events cost the Houghton Gremlins in the final seconds of a 39-37 loss at Westwood.
The Patriots, passing the ball around for the final shot, missed and Houghton's Ben Collaer came up with the rebound. As the Gremlins pulled up, expecting a timeout to be called, Westwood's Travis Swanson stole the ball and laid it in for the game-winning basket at the buzzer.
"This is the way sometimes games go. Sometimes that's life," Houghton coach Jared Lawson said.
The game was tight throughout. Lawson said that intensity took its toll down the stretch.
"We played really good defense throughout. Unfortunately, I think we were so exhausted that in the fourth quarter, we couldn't buy a bucket," he said.
The Gremlins, led by 12 points from Trent Keteri and 10 by Cody Goodreau, scored only five points in the final frame, though they held the Patriots to eight.
Swanson led the Pats, who won the JV game, with 11 points.
Houghton (10-6) can put this one behind them quickly, as the Gremlins are back in action today in a make-up game against Lake Linden-Hubbell.

freed leading scorer Aaron Kaikko for an 8-footer, but the shot missed and so did the follow-up tip.
Though the loss surely stings the Glads, who fall to 3-13 (3-6 CCC), they can at least take solace in being much better than they were during their Jan. 17 meeting in Painesdale, won by the Jets 60-39.
"That's the positive and knowing we have them in the first game of the district, knowing we can compete and have our chances to win in the end, it'll be a plus in the mental department for us going into the tournament," Ontonagon coach Tim Nelson said.
The Gladiators held Jeffers' Troy Kinnunen to just 10 points and two field goals, but just shifted the outside shooting chances to Outinen. The junior hit seven three-pointers en route to a game- and career-high 28 points.
"Unfortunately, they were able to find Outinen and he was just on fire tonight," Nelson said.
With guard Taylor Beaudry helping in the ballhandling department, the Glads got Kaikko loose for more chances. He led Ontonagon with 23 points.
"We were able to actually hit some open shots, which didn't happen the first time down in Jeffers' gym," Nelson said.
Ontonagon hosts Ironwood Monday night. The Jets (10-8, 7-2 CCC) host Baraga Tuesday.

BARAGA - Watersmeet made an early lead hold up to defeat Baraga in non-league play.
The Nimrods went up 17-6 in the first eight minutes, and the narrow margins by which the Vikings carried the last two quarters couldn't make up the gap.
Kevin Ivey scored 16 to lead the Nimrods. Marcus Bain added 11.
Zach Owens paced Baraga with 11.
The Vikings fall to 2-15 ahead of a make-up game with Chassell Monday.
